Child education calculator — what will the degree actually cost?

Education fees rise faster than almost anything else you buy. Enter today's fee and your child's age to see the inflated cost year by year, the corpus you need on day one of the course, and the monthly SIP that gets you there.

In Short
The cost of a degree is set by two things: education inflation, which in India has run at roughly 8–10% a year, well above general inflation, and the number of years until your child enrols. A four-year course costing ₹6 lakh a year today will cost about ₹1.06 crore in total for a four-year-old starting at 18, at 10% education inflation — fundable with a SIP of roughly ₹18,000 a month at a 12% return. Why education costs outrun everything else

Tuition, hostel and living costs in India have historically risen faster than the consumer price index — 8% to 10% a year is the range most planners work with, and overseas degrees add currency depreciation on top. A fee that looks manageable today roughly triples every twelve years at 10%.

The deadline is what makes this goal different from retirement. The date the child enrols cannot move, so the last three years of the plan are usually shifted out of equity into debt to protect a corpus you are about to spend.

The corpus you need is not the full inflated bill either. Only the first year's fee is due on enrolment day; the later years keep earning a return while the course runs, which is why this calculator discounts each year's fee back rather than adding them up.

The formulas

Fk = Ftoday × (1 + e)n+k
C = Σ Fk / (1 + R)k
SIP = (C − S) / FV1
e — education inflation · n — years until the course starts
k — year of the course, 0 for the first
R — return earned during the course · S — value of what you already hold
C — corpus required on enrolment day · FV₁ — what ₹1 a month grows into
